Observation Narrative
This bog is most accurately described as a woodland with variable tree cover and a central herbaceous opening. The plot was positioned to capture some of each physiognomic variant. The dominant tree is Pinus rigida, mostly quite stunted and only 15 to 25 cm DBH. Larger, taller pitch pines occur on the margins of the bog. Shrubs are patchy and include Alnus serrulata, Hypericum densiflorum, Lyonia ligustrina var. ligustrina, Spiraea tomentosa, and Vaccinium corymbosum. The most abundant herbs are Osmunda cinnamomea, Carex atlantica ssp. atlantica, Carex stricta, Rubus hispidus, and Eriophorum virginicum. Other less abundant but characteristic herbs are Parnassia asarifolia, Calamagrostis coarctata, Juncus brevicaudatus, and Juncus subcaudatus. Sphagnum spp. form a dense mantle over deep, poorly decomposed, locally quaking peat.
